World class wines and wineries are located in Traverse City and surrounding communities. Located near the 45th parallel, half way between the North Pole and the Equator helps vineyards of all sizes compete on the world stage of wine making.
The area is home to world class wineries; growing grapes and bottling wines on the scenic Old Mission Peninsula and Leelanau county. The wines have developed over the years and are steadily earning high placement in national and international competitions.
This area offers an ideal climate; vineyards are protected by heavy winter snows, yet temperatures are moderated by the close proximity to Lake Michigan. The water acts as a natural cooling unit during warm summer months and acts as a heating bottle during colder winter months. Traveling just a few miles inland can result in dramatic temperature differences, sometimes as much as 15-20 degrees. This unique climate is ideal for agricultural industries, and specifically, the wine industry.
The first winery opened in 1974. While well known for Rieslings, methode champenoise sparkling wines, chardonnay and fruit wines, Traverse City and the surrounding area vintners are now receiving more and more kudos for their red wines, Pinot Noirs, ice wines and other special varieties.
Northern Michigan visitors can enjoy days of touring and wine tasting at dozens of wineries located while enjoying some of the most breathtaking views in the area. Wineries are located on two beautiful peninsulas extending north from Traverse City - the Leelanau Peninsula and the Old Mission Peninsula.
